Allentown, PA— The Allentown Art Museum will hold its annual Gala Dinner Dance and Auction at the Museum on Saturday, April 5, 2008, 7 p.m. to 12 a.m. The Gala has become the premier black tie event in the Lehigh Valley. This year’s event honors Dorothy and Dexter Baker and the Baker Foundation and will feature a cocktail hour with passed hors d’oeuvres, a seated dinner, and a lavish dessert and coffee bar, with catering by Sodexho. Musical entertainment will be provided by the Tim Heiniman Danceband. Funds raised through this event support exhibitions and educational programs at the Museum.
The Bakers and their Dexter F. and Dorothy H. Baker Foundation are honored for their personal and financial commitments to the Museum over more than fifteen years. The Bakers have enthusiastically supported the Museum since they became members of the Kress Society in 1990. Dexter is currently serving on the Collections Committee of the Board of Trustees. Through their foundation, they have made significant financial commitments to the Museum.
Educational programs made possible by the Gala include both on-site and outreach programming to over 140 schools in and around the greater Lehigh Valley. In addition, the Museum helps to enrich the cultural and social life of the area with events like Cocktails & Collecting, Art After Hours, and exhibition preview parties. The Museum has become an integral part of downtown Allentown, and this is made possible in large part by the Gala event. The Museum serves over 117,000 visitors annually.
More than 350 guests are expected to attend this year’s Gala. Gala chair Terri Bartholomew said, "The Gala is such a festive evening. We are honoring the Bakers, who have been generous philanthropists in the Lehigh Valley, and we can celebrate with friends, dine in the exquisite ambience of the Museum, dance and bid on great auction items. I think this event is sure to be a sellout. Anyone who has been to the Gala before knows this is an evening not to be missed.” The 2008 Gala committee includes: Harriet Apfelbaum, Lygia Bellis, Suellen Blanton, Arjana Etchason, Susan Gadomski, De Gilsbach, Susan Harris, Mary Anne Johnson, Martha Lebovitz, Bobbi O’Brien, Jan Parsley, Penny Spugnardi, Jill Stevens, and Deni Thurman-Eyer.
