Some of the most influential artists at the turn of the sixteenth century, such as Leonardo da Vinci, Giorgione, and Albrecht Dürer, were in Venice at the time Giovanni Agostino da Lodi made this painting, around 1505. Agostino da Lodi has incorporated some influences from these artists into his own work. For example the shining ringlets of the lute-player's hair recall the paintings of Leonardo.
