In Our Backyard: Inspiring Pennsylvania Artists
What do Keith Haring, Walter Baum, and Harry Bertoia have in common? They are just some of the many well-known artists from Eastern Pennsylvania that are recognized for their outstanding artwork and creative contributions to the international art community. What was their life like? What inspired these artists? What type of artwork did they make? This imaginative program uses “mystery” bags as a starting point for discovering the lives and works of eight Pennsylvania artists. Students will match the artists with their work and discuss how artists are influenced and inspired by their surroundings and life experiences.
Frank Lloyd Wright: The Man, Message & Medium
Frank Lloyd Wright was one of America’s most famous architects, whose passion for design began as a child when his mother gave him a play set of blocks. Students will begin by comparing and contrasting the Victorian style, popular at the time, with Wright’s modernist ideals. Wright’s life and work, and the impact it had on design then and now, is a story that continues to this day. A primary focus of discussion is Wright’s love of nature and geometric shape and how he integrated those inspirations into his artful designs. This interactive program concludes with students creating their own unique window designs (light screens).
