THIRD THURSDAY in downtown Allentown—Destination: Arts

Every Third Thursday the Museum joins with other downtown arts organizations, restaurants, and retailers to fill your evening with fun things to do and see, from after-work drink specials to gallery tours, artist receptions, live music, and more; visit  DowntownAllentown.com   for a complete list of Third Thursday activities.  Admission to the Museum is free every Thursday evening starting at 4 p.m.

Tonight at the Museum:

5–8 p.m.
In the Museum Store: Jewelrymaker Svetlana Howells

Svetlana Howells crafts elegant jewelry in sterling silver using ancient and modern techniques. Tonight, meet the artist, talk to her about her latest work, and maybe take home a one of her highly textured, sculptural pieces for yourself.

5:30–7 p.m.
Artist-book workshop

Create a one-of-a-kind artist book that you can take home with you while you explore the engineering and visual components of the exhibitions Above the Fold: New Expression in Origami and Made in America: Industrial Photography from the Ungar Collection.

Tonight’s workshop is geared toward adults and will be led by Claire Marcus, who holds a BA in architecture, and BFA and MFA degrees in painting from the University of Pennsylvania. Born and raised in New York City, Marcus currently resides in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. She received a Lackawanna Arts and Culture grant in support of her book art and collages inspired by industrial history. The series was shown at Steamtown National Historic Site in 2013 and the Lackawanna Historical Society in 2013 and 2014.

A similar workshop for adults is being held at the Museum on May 18, with artist MaryAnn Miller.

These workshops are part of the Museum’s HeARThstone Project, supported through the generosity of the Harry C. Trexler Trust to help record the stories that make Allentown and its community unique. HeARThstone promotes literacy and creative thinking; develops critical thinking and 21st century skills; and encourages hands-on learning. It further demonstrates how artists make creative decisions while empowering participants as they create a handmade object that caries their personal voice into the world.

6 p.m.
Free guided tour of Above the Fold: New Expressions in Origami.

6–8 p.m.
This Jazz performance in the galleries by Dan DeChellis Trio serves as a taste of things to come, as Allentown JazzFest is partnering with the Museum to bring a full day of concerts and Jazz happenings to the Museum on May 6. Tonight, enjoy this free preview of JazzFest in the galleries!
