Pennsylvania folk culture will be on display in the Museum’s Goodman Gallery in Fabric of Life: Pennsylvania German Textiles, a showcase of the thrifty and decorative use of fabric in the everyday life of the “Pensilvany Dietsch.” This exhibit will examine the effect of the integration of local Anglo-American influences and mass produced printed cotton fabrics on Germanic design, sewing techniques, and lifestyle. Featured items will include a woven coverlet, a few examples of Berlin Woolwork, an early quilt, and a variety of samplers. A highlight will be a fine series of intricately detailed show towels from the Museum’s permanent collection. Come be inspired by the work of sensible women and mannerly children, as the ornamentation of everyday items are elevated to an art form.
