Linda Lee Alter: A Life in Art
Rodale Gallery

Philadelphia artist Linda Lee Alter’s life has been devoted to an all-embracing creative exploration of the arts. Her work has ranged from vibrant fabric wall hangings and appliqués with lively allegorical depictions of fables and Old Testament stories to paintings that serve as metaphors for life events. Many of her works, which have been widely exhibited and collected, have served as inspiration for children’s book illustrations and greeting cards.

Alter’s most recent work has focused on a series of paintings and prints about the effects of trigeminal neuralgia (facial pain), from which she has suffered since 2000. These small but powerful works expose some of the pain and fear that sufferers of the disorder experience. Alter notes that although trigeminal neuralgia initially imposed some limitations on her work, “the act of painting sets me free.”

Alter’s enthusiasm and commitment to working in the arts has extended far beyond her own personal creative output. Much of her energy has been devoted to helping other women in the arts, and in the early 1980s she began collecting art by women with the intent of making women’s art more visible. In 1993, she established the Leeway Foundation to recognize and support individual woman artists in the Philadelphia region. Foundation grants have done much to encourage and promote many artists, especially marginalized artists who often work on a grassroots level to create social change through their art.

Jacqueline M. Atkins, the Kate Fowler Merle-Smith Curator of Textiles, is curator for the exhibition, which will feature works in fiber, paint, and print from the five decades of the artist’s career.
