Allentown Art Museum Recent Acquisitions by the Allentown Art Museum

A recent gift has added considerably to the Museum’s collection of quilts and woven coverlets. Milton Sonday, former textile curator of the Cooper-Hewitt Museum in New York City, has generously gifted the Museum with eight quilts dating from the 1880s through the early 1940s, many of which were made by members or friends of the Sonday family, who had a residence in Hamburg, Berks County, Pennsylvania. A charming crib quilt made for Sonday by his grandmother, Anetta Stoyer, was included in the gift. Other unique quilts in the group include one with a striking medallion design made in 1893 and another with a patriotic 1940s stars and stripes design. Sonday’s gift also included four nineteenth-century woven coverlets, all made by Pennsylvania weavers. One colorful piece includes the weaver’s name and location (S. Keuter, Trexlertown, Lehigh County) in a corner block, as well as the purchaser’s name and the date of production (Mary Ann Dankel, 1845). This helpful information that weavers sometimes incorporated into their patterns adds historical value to the coverlet in addition to the wonderful floral design scheme that would have added a vibrant decorative touch to the owner’s bed.

The Museum welcomed another piece of Tiffany glass into the collection with the generous donation of a three-handled loving cup from Christine Oaklander in honor of her mentor, Mary Alice Mackay. The cup is an example of Louis Comfort Tiffany’s patented “Favrile” glass, manufactured in Tiffany Studios from 1902 to 1932. The trade name, Favrile, was derived from the French word, fabrile, meaning handcrafted. This loving cup, a rare form in Tiffany’s repertoire of glass vessels, boasts the famed iridescence that set his Favrile glass apart from all others as well as a wheel-carved intaglio leaf and vine decoration, not often seen. The iridescent effect of Favrile glass was obtained during the glass-making process by mixing different colors of molten glass together.
