2010 Gala Dinner Dance and Auction

Seats for this year’s Gala on Saturday, April 10, are going fast. Please join us as we honor Pat and Sandy Beldon and Ilene and Bob Wood. Dine on delicious food and drink and dance the night away to live music by the Philadelphia Funk Authority. Not only will you see the museum at its most elegant, but you’ll have the opportunity to bid on an amazing selection of travel, shopping, dining, art and entertainment opportunities at our live and silent auctions. All auction items can be previewed in the museum’s SOTA Foyer now through Gala day, and bids on silent auction items may be made during the preview—so if you're not able to make it to the Gala, you can still support the museum by bidding on your favorite items! DINNER FOR EIGHT AT "TRA LA LA"

Guests will be treated to a gourmet culinary experience at the renowned Hess Mansion, known as “Tra La La.” Your evening will begin with cocktails in the drawing room, followed by a delectable dinner in the dining room prepared by a Sodexo Executive Chef. Guests will also enjoy an exotic belly dancing performance and the meal will conclude with a surprise iconic dessert! Complementary wines will be served with dinner.

“John Lewis.” John Opie pays tribute to John Lewis–one of jazz’s greatest treasures, pianist and composer–in this mixed media work; working on top of drypoint and etching with pastel and acrylic to produce this unique artwork.

12. WILLIAM W. SWALLOW

From Swallow’s descendents, these three pieces show Swallow’s interest in traditional Pennsylvania German images and motifs. Swallow founded the arts department at Parkland High School and was a nationally known ceramic sculptor who studied in Philadelphia. His work is in the Metropolitan Museum of Art and Allentown Art Museum.

21. WILLIAM BABCOCK


Drawing. William Babcock was the first American artist to work in Barbizon. He studied under Thomas Couture in Paris and was good friends with Jean Francois Millet. Focused on peasant and mythological subjects, he exhibited in the Paris salons and the Boston Athenaeum.

1940’s oil study of Long Island shore. Descended directly from the family to current owner. Christy was famous as an illustrator of pin up girls and as a portraitist to important historical figures and wealthy private clients. “October” is from a series of prints titled “Trees of Bucks County.” The prints were made using a sugar lift (or lift ground) technique. Tom Slaughter has had more than 30 solo exhibitions in New York, Los Angeles, Miami, Vancouver, Germany and Japan and has worked as a print maker in collaboration with Durham Press for 20 years. All plate preparation, processing, proofing and edition printing were done at Durham Press in the winter of 2000/2001.
