Free Lecture: American Medici: The Kress Brothers

THURSDAY, OCTOBER 11, 7 PM

Join Jocelyn Kress, niece of Samuel H. Kress and daughter of Rush H. Kress, for an evening of personal reminiscences on the Kress family fortune, Samuel Kress’s architectural patronage, and the creation and eventual dispersal of the Samuel H. Kress Collection of European painting including a significant gift to the Allentown Art Museum in 1960. Ms. Kress will focus on works of art specific to the Museum’s collection, touching on the many decisions, selections, and other criteria that went into building one of the Kress Foundation’s most important regional collections. Ms. Kress spent her childhood living with many of these paintings, and her unique insights about the collection will illuminate one of America’s most important philanthropies.

Jocelyn Kress has spoken internationally at some of the world’s premier venues including Versailles, the Wallace Collection in London, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Reception immediately following lecture. Registration recommended: call 610-432-4333, ext. 10 or mail the registration form.

Art Appreciation Course

TUESDAYS, OCTOBER 16- NOVEMBER 6, 6:30– 8 PM

Back by popular demand! Take a closer look at the decorative and fine arts of the Art Nouveau movement, an international style of art, architecture and design that peaked in popularity at the beginning of the 20th century and was characterized by highly stylized, flowing, curvilinear designs often incorporating floral and other plant-inspired motifs. In each of the four sessions you will deepen your understanding through art talks, behind-the-scenes opportunities and visits to the special exhibitions Tiffany by Design and Alphonse Mucha: Art Nouveau Extraordinaire. Each session will be led by a Museum curator or guest expert. Register early, as space is limited to 20 participants, by mailing the registration form or calling 610-432-4333, ext. 10: Members $50, Non-members $70.
