The modern necktie has its origins in the seventeenth century when the neckerchief worn by Croatian soldiers was embraced as fashionable attire by the French court. Called a cravat, distorted from the French word for Croat, the neckwear evolved through various forms until in the mid-nineteenth century it became long and thin and easy to knot. In the 1920s the method of cutting the fabric on the bias was perfected thus creating the tie as we know it.
