ALLENTOWN’S ARTS PARK GETS SPLASH OF COLOR
Downtown arts organizations make the most of Chamber grant

Twenty colorful banners have been installed on the lamp posts in Arts Park at Fifth and Court Streets in Allentown to help identify the Park for residents and visitors alike. The banners include an Arts Park logo along with the names of five arts organizations that border the Park or are within walking distance: Allentown Art Museum, The Baum School of Art, Community Music School, Miller Symphony Hall, and Youth Education in the Arts (YEA). These organizations applied jointly for a Main Street grant that was approved by the Lehigh Valley Chamber of Commerce Foundation. The Chamber grant paid for half of the banners, while the arts organizations split the cost of the rest. The banners were installed by the City of Allentown’s Parks and Recreation Department.

“Arts Park is at the center of Allentown’s Arts District, and with the recent opening of Three City Center on the south side of the park it has become a focal point of activity in the new downtown,” said Chris Potash, marketing manager at the Art Museum, which submitted the grant application for the group. “The banners will help brand the Park as a meeting place, especially before or after an event at one of the arts partners’ locations.”

The Arts Park banners were designed by the Media Arts Group (MAG), the in-house agency at the Morning Call Media Group. MAG Designer Sarah Sterner created the Arts Park logo as well as the banner design. “Sarah is proud to have received this opportunity, and as always she poured her heart and soul into the project,” said MAG creative director, William Childs.

Says Lorie Reinert, executive director of the Chamber Foundation, “The beauty and sustainability of our Main Streets is a high priority for the Chamber and the business community, and we are glad for the opportunity to provide support for projects that will provide a positive visual impact in our downtowns and on our Main Streets.”
