Pro baller Darrun Hilliard invites Allentowners to MAKE YOUR MARK!

                                               MAKE YOUR MARK, ALLENTOWN!
Basketball pro Darrun Hilliard heads up Museum community-improvement campaign

Building on the success of its previous one-day community celebrations—Woven Welcome, Folk Art & Community Fest, Regalo Cultural, Martin Luther King Day—the Allentown Art Museum of the Lehigh Valley has planned a video contest and two-day event for the summer of 2017 with the goal of engaging youth and families in their community and encouraging diverse audiences to mingle in downtown Allentown and inside the Museum. To bring some celebrity cache to help promote “Make Your Mark, Allentown!” the Museum is partnering with Liberty High School (Bethlehem) and Villanova University basketball standout Darrun Hilliard, now with the NBA’s Detroit Pistons, to be the public face of the project.

“Make Your Mark, Allentown!” will consist of two parts. The first is a call for submissions inviting Allentown residents to submit an idea for a community-improvement project in their neighborhood: a vacant lot to clean up, a park to plant a tree in, a wall to paint a mural on—anything that can be accomplished by a committed group of volunteers, including Darrun Hilliard, in a single day. A video has already been produced of Darrun requesting video submissions to be uploaded to the Museum’s web page between March 28 and April 29, 2017. Watch video here. The winning project will be chosen by a panel of Museum staff and community members and be started/completed on Saturday, June 24.

The second part of the event will happen on Sunday, June 25, from noon till 4 p.m. in Arts Park and inside the Museum. All of the Lehigh Valley, including downtown Allentonians, are invited to participate in fun, free, healthy, family friendly activities that have a printmaking or mark-making component, in honor of our summer exhibition of prints collected by Museum benefactor Paul Kania. Community groups are welcome to set up tables or booths and be part of the event.

Audience Development and Promotion
Outreach will be conducted to organizations that have partnered with the Museum previously, such as Promise Neighborhood and Community Bike Works as well as local schools, faith-based organizations, and community centers.

A promotional handout in both English and Spanish will detail the activities for the June 25, 2017 event. Darrun Hilliard and the Musuem will both post about the project on social media, and the Museum will promote on its website, ads in local papers, on radio stations, and possibly on TV via media partnerships.

We shot the promotional video with Darrun Hilliard in August 2016 at Allentown’s Valania Park. Before and after, he interacted with kids on the playground. (video shoot and edit by Marco Calderon)
