“Rise Together Allentown” set for September 13 unveiling

Allentown, Pa—The Allentown Art Museum is pleased to announce the launch of “Rise
Together Allentown,” a community-based sculptural project coordinated and executed
by artist Charlie Brouwer. The project aims to engage residents, businesses, and
organizations in Allentown and the greater Lehigh Valley by asking them to lend their
ladders to construct a temporary installation in Allentown’s Arts Park, located at Fifth
and Linden Streets across from the Museum. The sculpture will be completed on
Saturday, September 13,
during the “Rise Together Allentown” PPL Center Open
House and Arts Park Celebration that features activities along Arts Walk by the Baum
School of Art, Community Music School, Allentown Symphony Association, Liberty Bell
Museum, Civic Theatre of Allentown, and Youth Education in the Arts. The ladder
sculpture will remain in Arts Park through October 12.

Each ladder will be recorded and tagged and its lender’s name added to a list on the
project website—www.risetogetherallentown.org—and on a sign in Arts Park.
Ladders of all sizes are welcome, including stepstools, toy ladders, and creative ladders
made of any material. Lenders may personalize or decorate their ladders, and they may
lend them in the name of someone or something they wish to memorialize. All ladders
will be returned after the month-long exhibition. If owners do not want their ladder
returned they will be donated to Habitat for Humanity of the Lehigh Valley.
The project’s goal is to include hundreds of ladders from as many people and
parts of the greater Allentown community as possible. “Each ladder represents the
hopes and dreams of a part of the community,” says Brouwer, “but when they are all
connected, supporting and being supported by each other, they will be able to rise
together to create a metaphor for community.”

Sponsors of the project include Air Products, Allentown Arts Commission,
Alvin H. Butz Inc., and City Center Lehigh Valley
. Special thanks to the Werner
Ladder Co. of Greenville, Pa, for twenty-five new ladders to get the project started.

To lend a ladder or to get involved with this project, see schedule below or contact the Allentown Art Museum at (610) 432-4333 ext. 127 or email RiseTogether2014 [at] gmail [dot] com.
