“Peter Grippe: 21 Etchings and Poems”

Thursday, October 28, 6:30–8 p.m.
Free for museum members and college students with ID; $5 for non-members

Join us as educators from various Lehigh Valley universities explore the combination of poetry and images in Atelier 17’s portfolio, “21 Etchings and Poems.” This portfolio, published in 1958, represents a noteworthy collaboration between the visual and literary arts. The portfolio, initiated by artist Peter Grippe, director of the renowned Atelier 17 print workshop, was the result of nearly 10 years of effort. “21 Etchings and Poems” is a landmark of mid-20th century American print publishing and unique in its inclusion of writers and artists across the spectrum of the 1950s. Some of the artists included are: Willem de Kooning, Franz Kline, Jacques Lipchitz, and authors: Dylan Thomas, Harold Rosenberg, and Frank O’Hara.

Presenter Margo Thompson, Ph.D., is assistant professor of art history at Muhlenberg College and a frequent lecturer at the museum. Presenter James Weiss is a performance artist, storyteller and art historian. He has written and produced dozens of collaborative performances and has performed at The Cleveland Performance Art Festival, The Yale Art Gallery and locally at Goggleworks. He has been adjunct art history lecturer at Kutztown University and Philadelphia University.
