Napoleon's 1798 invasion of Egypt sparked a fashion for Egyptian-themed decorative arts in France, but the artists he brought with him on the military campaign
were not the first to record the ancient art and architecture of Egypt. The painter Louis-François Cassas traveled to the Middle East in 1785, and in
1798 began to publish engravings based on his travels. Some of these were adapted for the pattern on this length of furnishing fabric. |
