Brother Thomas, a renowned ceramist, is strongly influenced by Asian pottery, often adapting traditional Chinese and Japanese methods and materials to his work. The glaze
on this hand-thrown vase is called "Tenmoku," a Japanese term for a black and rust-colored iron glaze that originated in China in the T'ang dynasty (618-906).
