Mini-Tours in the Classroom
Allentown Art Museum: Mini-Tour: Change

The Greek philosopher Heraclitus said, "There is nothing permanent except change." When artists document change, comment upon change, or create change through art, they give us the opportunity to reflect on what change means to us. See if you can discover the way artists have addressed change in the works of art in this tour.

Classroom Activities
Have students choose one work of art in this theme to begin a story, and a second work of art to end it. What happens in the middle?

Some of these paintings document geographical change. Locate pictures of your school from years past. Ask students how an artist today might portray the school. What tools would they have now that they didn't have then?

Have students look at and learn about the works of art on this mini-tour and cast votes for which work of art they believe represents the biggest change. What opinions or evidence can they offer to support their vote?

Have students secretly choose a work of art from this theme and write a poem or riddle that describes it. Have students trade writings and try to decipher which work of art is the subject of each poem or riddle.

Changes in some of the works of art in this theme are represented by metaphors. Have students read descriptions of the works of art and identify metaphors for change.
