The Spaniard Pablo Picasso was one of the most famous, influential, and prolific artists of the twentieth century. He worked in many media, including painting, sculpture,
and printmaking. During his long career, Picasso's style varied from representational to varied degrees of abstraction. In this etching, made in 1927 as part of a set
illustrating Honoré de Balzac's Le Chef-d'Oeuvre Inconnu, he combined styles by representing a realistically rendered artist making an abstract painting
of a model knitting.
