Each end of this towel has a Turkish love poem stitched in Arabic script and bordered by tiny pieces of metal. The poem laments the absence of a woman's beloved, and the
ships, embroidered in brightly colored silk and metal-wrapped threads, echo the theme of separation. The embroidery technique of pulled threadwork creates perforations
in the fabric. It is common to many Turkish towels and can be seen in the ships' sails. |
