Though the famous French caricaturist Honoré Daumier is now also known as a painter and sculptor, he made his reputation in Paris beginning in the 1830s
through his political and satirical lithographs. In this print, published in le Charivari in 1857, he showed a bourgeois family studying the sumptuous array
of cheeses in a shop window. The caption translates: "Father of the family inspiring his children with an early respect and admiration for beautiful things..."
