The German artist Mary Bauermeister lived and worked in the United States between 1962 and 1972. She is known for experimenting with the use of music theory in her visual
art, and for her assemblages, such as this sculpture from 1965. She explicitly addressed the relationship between art and nature by writing comments on the river rocks
and pebbles that she arranged and glued onto the backing panel. Her work process remains apparent in the finished work, since she made no effort to hide penciled
guidelines or glue.
