Sidney Edward Dickinson studied in New York at the Art Students League under William Merritt Chase and George Bridgman, and the National Academy of Design under Douglas
Volk. Dickinson remained true to his academic training throughout his career, a stance that gained him many portrait commissions. This painting of his Carnegie Hall
studio is a family portrait. The model is his future wife, Mary Watson. A portrait of his parents, made in 1919, hangs on the wall, and the artist has included himself
in the right side of the painting.
