Pre- and Post-Visit Activities
Pre-Visit Activities
- Introduce students to the Allentown Art Museum by describing what it is, where it is located and what it contains. Ask students: What is a museum? Has anyone ever
visited the Allentown Art Museum or another museum before? What did you see at the museum?
- Discuss with students what life was like around the turn of the 20th century. Show examples of artwork, architecture, fashion, and music. How do these examples compare
to their lives today?
- Ask students: Who is Frank Lloyd Wright? What did he design? What is an architect? If they are not familiar with Wright, have students explore his designs on websites
such as The Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation at www.franklloydwright.org and Wright on the Web at www.delmars.com/wright/flwright.htm. Discuss their findings.
Post-Visit Activities
- Have students research one of the artists presented other than Frank Lloyd Wright — Edward Weston, James Daugherty, etc. — to find out more about their
lives and to look at other works they created.
- Challenge students to become designers themselves. Have students design a modern textile print, a building, a chair, or a car.
- Invite an architect into your classroom to discuss with students their creative process when designing a building, house, shopping mall, etc.
- Schedule a field trip to see a modern ballet, an experimental theater production or to hear a contemporary composer. Compare what they see and hear to more traditional
dances, theater productions and music.
