The Four Seasons
Guided Visit

Pre-Visit Activities

  • Introduce students to the Allentown Art Museum by describing where it is, where it is located and what it contains. Ask students: What is a museum? Has anyone ever been to the Allentown Art Museum or another museum before? What did you see at the museum? Explain how they will get to the Museum and what will happen once they arrive.

  • Discuss the four seasons. Do they have a favorite season? Why? What are some of the activities they can do during their favorite season? How do they dress? What colors do they associate with the seasons? Why?

  • Using fabric swatches or colored construction paper, hold up different colors. How do different colors make them feel? Do they have a favorite color?

  • Review Museum Etiquette with students to ensure they understand the unique qualities of museums as compared to other places that are familiar to them — the library, their house, the grocery store, etc.

Post-Visit Activities

  • Review the trip with students. Ask them: What did they see? What did they do while they were at the Allentown Art Museum? What was their favorite artwork or activity? Have the students create a thank-you card to send to the Museum docent or educator that worked with their group. Have them draw their favorite artwork on the front.

  • While visiting the Museum, students viewed landscapes. What other types of "scapes" are there (city, sea, country, etc.)? What would they expect to see in these views? Use the Museum's online collection to look for other "scapes" to share with students, then have them create their own painting, collage, or drawing using a palette of their choice.

  • Learning to depict the four seasons can be challenging. Have students divide a sheet of paper into four sections and draw a tree as it would be in each of the four seasons, using different techniques to help illustrate the differences between the seasons.

  • Print a variety of images from the Museum's online collection and have students organize them by season. Be sure to include abstract and contemporary works of art to make the activity a little more challenging!
