The Art of Stories
(Grades 1 - 4)

Step back in time! For centuries art has been made by people all around the world to record history, for worshipping, for the pleasure of creating or to tell a story. During this program students will use images of artworks from the Museum's collection to take imaginary trips to India, Japan and America at different times in their histories. After a brief introduction to each country using touchable objects, they'll discover some of the many techniques and materials used by artists to create the works of art on view. Stories drawn from the artworks will be shared, creating a common thread between these diverse countries. From the ancient Hindu sculptures of India to traditional printmaking in Japan, to paintings of 19th-century American tales, your students will delight in the diversity of the artworks represented and the terrific tales told. Let's Go Pennsylvania!
(Grades 3 - 6)

What's an artist's life like? What inspires artists? Who are some of the many artists from eastern Pennsylvania? This imaginative program uses "mystery" bags as a starting point for discovering the life and work of eight Pennsylvania artists. Students will use their detective skills to reveal the identity of Walter Baum, Mildred T. Johnstone, Harry Bertioa, Judith Joy Ross, Henry Tanner, Robert Venturi, Jack Savitsky and Barbara Zartman. Then they will match the artists with their works of art. Finally, they'll discuss how artists are influenced and inspired by their surroundings and life experiences and how these are reflected in their artwork. Remember, don't tell the students the names of the artists before we come to visit — it'll spoil the surprise! More Info

Mostly Modern: Introducing Frank Lloyd Wright
(Grades 3 - 6)

Change. Innovation. Vision. This program introduces students to one of America's most famous architects. Frank Lloyd Wright led the charge for change in the United States at a time when the Victorian style was popular. By comparing and contrasting Victorian objects with modernist materials, students will develop an understanding of the world in which Wright was living and how he expressed his vision for a modern America through his innovative designs of houses, buildings, furniture, windows and much more. Along the way students will explore the work of other modern artists who experimented with photography, sculpture, painting and even fabric design. The Museum's collection forms the foundation for this hands-on program that will bring to life the mostly modern world that was emerging during the early 1900s, with Frank Lloyd Wright at the forefront.
