Collage, Assemblage, and Appropriation

Is the whole greater than the sum of its parts? Definitely, if the imaginative works in this installation are any indication. Eleven selections from the Museum’s collection, including works by Larry Rivers, Ilse Getz, and Claes Oldenburg explore creation from readymade materials. In collage and assemblage, artists bring together two- or three-dimensional objects ranging from traditional art supplies to random everyday objects. On the other hand, an artist borrows or imitates the work of another artist to create a new work of appropriation art. See how these three processes have impacted 20th-century and contemporary art, separately and together.
