A youthful crew from ArtU is putting finishing touches on a mural that will brighten up the new basketball court at Stevens Park in Allentown. The mural will be unveiled as part of the City’s celebration of the renovated park, being held on Saturday, June 28, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Stevens Park is located at the corner of Sixth and Tilghman streets, not far from the Museum.

The mural will serve not only as a beautiful addition to the scenery of Stevens Park but also as inspiration for the community it serves. The sunrise represents a new day and new beginnings, while the stylized clouds symbolize brighter days ahead. The birds represent the souls of loved ones lost, particularly due to senseless violence. The bright colors reflect the vibrant community that visits the park every day.

The Museum partnered with Art+ Action Fellow Kyle Edwards to launch Artrepreneur University last year as a series of free workshops for artists aged 15-25 aimed at turning their passion for the visual arts into a career. The design and creation of the mural was one of the ArtU students’ key activities, providing them the opportunity to leave their marks on their hometown (literally!) while gaining valuable insight into what it takes to achieve a sustainable income as a working artist.

The next time you are passing by Stevens Park—maybe on a trip to the Museum?—stop and take a look at the mural and consider how it might be inspiring community.
