The Museum’s ongoing exhibitions of the permanent collection highlight artistic creativity across centuries and hemispheres.
In the Kress Gallery, visitors can enjoy Italian, Dutch, Flemish, and rare German paintings and sculpture dating from the 1300s to 1700s. From ornate works intended to inspire religious reverence to realistic scenes commenting on daily life, this gallery illuminates cultural transformations during the Renaissance and Baroque eras.
The Museum’s American galleries examine the important role of American artists from the 1700s to the present. By portraying their country’s history, land, and people, or by using abstraction to break with the past, these artists have given voice to both personal and national identities. Among the artists represented in these galleries are Benjamin West, Henry Ossawa Tanner, Franz Kline, Harry Bertoia, Jésus Rafael Soto, Louise Nevelson, Keith Haring, and Kay WalkingStick.
Visitors can also enter and explore Frank Lloyd Wright’s 1915 library from the Francis W. Little House. Relocated here from its original home in Minnesota, this room expresses Wright’s modern vision for American design. The adjacent Decorative Arts Corridor focuses on the broader world of early twentieth century design, with Arts and Crafts ceramics and stunning glass by Louis Comfort Tiffany.
