Deciding which direction a painting will go is a democratic process between the painting and me. Sometimes we agree and sometimes we do not. My inspiration comes from many sources; paintings, drawings, the newspaper, photographs, cartoons, the sky, etc. I usually start out with a specific idea, but by the time I finish the painting it sometimes hardly resembles what I had intended. That process can be both exciting and frustrating.
I agree with the artist Francis Bacon when he stated, “The hardest thing about painting is knowing when to stop.” A successful painting is a primitive two-dimensional subconscious communication powerhouse. This medium can inform us on many levels, both emotionally and aesthetically. A basic visual language was written on cave walls 35,000 years ago and retains its significance. Make no mistake about it; we are still drawing on cave walls.
