Elizabeth Johnson will present ink figure drawings and ocean drawings that were made in California along with more recent oils on canvas from the Anti-Story and Dimensional Painting series. The ocean drawings were created on site at Ocean Beach in San Francisco between 2000 and 2008: I was interested in the patterns the sea makes as it hits the shore, and occasionally added fisherman, distant ships or surfers for scale. I also made ink figure drawings during this time at a weekly Figure Drawing class hosted by the Mission Cultural Center. After I moved to Easton, Pennsylvania, I started to write more about other artists, and from 2011-2020 made Anti-Story Paintings that resist narrative or verbal dominance. Since 2019, I have been making Dimensional Paintings that join curved or sculptural images to suggest restless and disorderly, imaginary spaces.
