The Allentown Art Museum (AAM) is a 21st-century regional museum with nine decades of robust research in the arts and collecting and preserving art. The Museum is an inclusive resource that uses arts and culture as a catalyst to drive interaction, education, experimentation, and social change by offering exhibitions and programs that inspire, teach, engage, and transform.  An individual in this role will help AAM in reaching their strategic vision by focusing in the areas of education, vibrancy, and relevance in order to increase community impact, ensure excellence, engage audiences, and build capacity.

Job Description:
The Community Activation Coordinator will work closely with members of the Museum staff as well as the communities that we serve and community partners to research issues that impact the Lehigh Valley and develop responsive, high-quality programs that foster engagement and authentic connections with the community. The individual in this role, along with members of the Education and Public Engagement team and other key Museum staff, will provide strategic direction for the creation and enhancement of dynamic programming and opportunities that prioritize diverse community participation and inclusive, interactive programming.

The individual in this position will also play a key role in developing and facilitating AAM Social Action Framework, which will inform the ways in which the Museum can provide positive impact on the infrastructure of our region. Working together as a team, this position and department will work to build bridges and provide positive and lasting impact as a welcoming resource in the downtown Allentown neighborhood and surrounding communities. The role of the Community Activation Coordinator requires excellent communication skills, authenticity, skills in building and sustaining relationships, ability to work with a wide array of audiences, strong cultural competency and literacy, and possess a positive spirit of service and advocacy.

Key Responsibilities

  • Research current needs and gaps in service represented in the Allentown and greater Lehigh Valley community
  • Represent AAM at community events and regularly interact with community boards and other local government and non-profit officials to identify opportunities, services, and collaborations that will benefit the community
  • Serve as a primary point of contact for community members and facilitate conversations on matters affecting the Lehigh Valley Community
  • Evaluate current community partnerships for opportunities for growth and new engagement within the scope of the Museum’s mission
  • In collaboration with the Education and Public Engagement team, develop and implement AAM’s Social Action Framework, which acts as a strategic plan for how the Museum will cultivate social action and community activists in alignment with the Museum’s mission.
  • Work collaboratively with the Director of Education and Public Engagement and other department colleagues to establish sustainable and impactful partnerships and goals for community outreach and engagement
  • Work with the President and CEO to develop a Board of Trustees Community Committee to facilitate long-lasting strategic planning in relation to community building around the arts
  • Facilitate relationship building and partnership opportunities with the Lenape tribe.
  • Oversee language accessibility and translation service coordination for the department of Education and Public Engagement
  • Coordinate COVES data collection and survey initiative including
    • developing weekly data collection calendar
    • approaching Museum guests to invite them to participate in evaluation study by responding to a survey
    • follow data collection protocol which covers how to approach guests to ensure random sampling, what information is pertinent to share, and how to track responses


Additional Responsibilities

  • Oversee and collaborate with team and other Museum personnel to create programming initiatives and opportunities that:
  • Break down barriers of involvement and build bridges to continuing to enhance the Museum’s community impact and outreach
  • Create visibility and exposure of the Museum in alignment with the needs of the community and as a regional resource
  • Align with the Museum’s overall strategic vision and plan
  • Connect with a broad range of stakeholders including children, teens, families, adults, and the community at large
  • Advocate, inspire, and engage audiences through a variety of different formats and platforms
  • Drive attendance, strengthen visitor experience, foster an appreciation of the arts, and deepen connections to the community in and throughout the downtown and surrounding regional area
  • Coordinate Community Engagement programs, including hiring and working with contracted artists, instructors, lecturers, speakers, performers, etc., set program outcomes goals, manage all related programming activities, work with marketing department on marketing initiatives, conduct outreach for attendees, generate and organize program processes and procedures, and implement the different facets of the programming
  • Collaborate with Museum colleagues to create a consistent and shared connecting experience for visitors
  • Develop and strengthen the Museum’s community volunteer program by developing Volunteer Guidelines, managing volunteer recruitment in collaboration with the marketing department, and implement a scheduling structure.


Administration and Operational Responsibilities

  • Maintain the budget for key programs listed above, and think strategically about the resources needed for sustainability and growth
  • Retain records of Community Engagement Programs, including enrollment and attendance numbers as well as evaluations and program impact records through software
  • Manage the grants and awards, along with the Grants Manager, for key programs highlighted above
  • Collaborate with members of the Education and Public Engagement Team as well as members of Development, Marketing, Curatorial, Operations, and Administration teams
  • Work with and develop sustainable and dynamic relationships within the community


Competencies and Skills

  • Bachelor’s Degree in studies related to Community Engagement and Outreach, Museum Studies, Social Services, Humanities, Communications, and/or Cultural and Social Sciences is preferred but not required. Related experience in the above-mentioned field(s) is necessary
  • Noted involvement and relationships within the community
  • Demonstrated experience in social advocacy and service
  • Bilingual, Spanish and English speaking required
  • Idea generation, creativity, and solution oriented
  • Passionate about the community, arts, and creating dynamic programming and initiatives that create impactful visitor experiences
  • A compelling communicator with excellent interpersonal skills and ability to build strong relationships, work collaboratively across a diverse range of internal and external stakeholders, and infuse energy into innovative and creative initiatives
  • A deep interest in community and willingness to develop programming that centers around diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility in society
  • Appreciating and understanding the role cultural institutions have in creating positive and lasting impact
