Allentown Art Museum is seeking an organized and motivated intern for the Education and Accessibility Intern. The Education and Accessibility Intern will assist in designing and developing lessons, activities, workshops, toolkits, and accessibility manipulatives for Museum visitors and programs. Interns will lead workshops, lessons, and guided tours among other responsibilities. Interns will also work collaboratively on developing curriculum and conducting education and accessibility research.

Interns will gain practical experience teaching in a museum setting and developing high quality educational lessons, workshops, and interpretive materials for Museum visitors. They will learn and utilize a variety of educational pedagogies, teaching techniques, and hands-on skills. They will broaden their understanding of museums and their role in a community while developing greater interpersonal, writing, educational design, and teaching skills.

All interns will participate in workshops which strengthen their understanding of how museums function internally and within the greater arts ecosystem. Interns will also have regular readings based on international museum issues, educational practice, museum ethics, public accessibility, and best practices. Interns will attend meetings and other events related to this project.

 

Interns will be expected to:

  • Create 1 seasonal lesson plan for the Sensory Saturday program
  • Create 1 seasonal lesson plan for the Field Trip Friday program
  • Create 3-5 manipulative objects, tactile, or adaptive tools for use during Museum programs
  • Develop 1 written research or program proposal related to museum accessibility
  • Lead 5 or more guided tours for K-12 and/or adult audiences
  • Assist in facilitating 5-7 sessions of AAM’s Art Can program

 

Qualifications

The Public Engagement department is seeking an individual who is energetic, personable, flexible, and passionate about the arts. A successful candidate must demonstrate some understanding or experience in arts education.  Candidates with experience teaching or facilitating programs for persons with disabilities will be given special consideration. This individual will work with the Museum’s diverse audiences and therefore must possess knowledge, sensitivity, and understanding of the social, political, personal, and cross-cultural needs of students and participants. Familiarity with graphic design and video editing/creation is also a plus.    Fluency in Spanish is preferred, but not required.

Compensation

The Allentown Art Museum is proud to offer a $2000 stipend to interns accepted into the program upon the completion of 120 hours of work. Stipends are provided in three intervals during the semester. Other benefits include complimentary Student Membership which gives access to discounts at several local shops and eateries, as well as a discount at the Museum Store.
