Explore over 150 works of American art—and their connections to both local and global artistic communities—through our American galleries. This ongoing exhibition investigates how trade, colonization, and the migration of people and ideas have shaped our nation’s culture. Recent acquisitions, including contemporary art and works by African American, Latinx, Latin American, and Indigenous artists, play a key role in this narrative.
New works on view
The American galleries regularly change to feature new selections of works on paper and textiles. The latest installation, on view February 27 – August 10, 2025, will bring over fifty new works into these galleries.

Highlights include works by Mary McFadden, Joan Miró, Radcliffe Bailey, and Jennifer Bartlett, as well as textiles from Pennsylvania German and Navajo traditions. Aliza Nisenbaum’s monumental portrait of Angel Blue, a recent acquisition, will be on view for the first time. Another important addition is Alteronce Gumby’s Freedom Only Known to Them in Whispers and Tales, also a recent acquisition: this painting fluoresces under ultraviolet light, exploring issues of invisibility, race, and identity.
