The Allentown Art Museum has again achieved accreditation by the American Alliance of Museums, the highest national recognition afforded to the nation’s museums. Accreditation signifies excellence to the museum community, funders, outside agencies, and to the museum-going public. All museums must undergo a reaccreditation review at least every 10 years to maintain accredited status.
Of the nation’s estimated 33,000 museums, roughly 1,100 are currently accredited.
In its review, the American Alliance of Museums concluded, “The Allentown Art Museum is making a clear and positive impact on its self-identified and geographic communities, particularly through education, access, and sustained community partnerships. The Museum demonstrates a strong understanding of the needs of its region and has built programs that are responsive, culturally competent, and adaptable over time.”
Max Weintraub, President and CEO of the Allentown Art Museum, says, “Reaccreditation is a powerful affirmation of our commitment to excellence, accountability, and public service. It reflects the dedication of our staff, board, and volunteers, and underscores our deep commitment to the people we serve. We are proud to be a trusted, inclusive resource where our community can connect, learn, and find meaning through art.”
Accreditation is a rigorous process that examines all aspects of a museum’s operations. To earn accreditation, a museum first must conduct a year of self study, and then undergo a site visit by a team of peer reviewers. The American Alliance of Museums’ Accreditation Commission, an independent and autonomous body of museum professionals, considers the self-study and visiting committee report to determine whether a museum should receive accreditation.
“Accreditation is a monumental achievement,” said Marilyn Jackson, President and CEO of the American Alliance of Museums. “The process demonstrates an institution’s commitment to best practices.”
Developed and sustained by museum professionals for more than fifty years, the American Alliance of Museum’s accreditation program is the field’s primary vehicle for quality assurance, self-regulation, and public accountability.
Admission to the Allentown Art Museum is free, Thursday through Sunday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and on Third Thursdays 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Parking is free in the Museum’s lot at Fifth and Linden Streets.
