On the first Friday of each month from noon to 3 p.m., the Museum offers Field Trip Fridays. The program encourages learners and their families to enjoy a free A LCarte Art tour in the galleries with Museum educators and experience artmaking in the Crayola Classroom. Each artmaking session includes a hands-on creative project inspired by an artwork highlighted from the Museum’s collections.

Adventures in Learning is a homeschool co-op that participates in monthly Field Trip Fridays. The homeschool co-op is local to the Lehigh Valley and consists of several families that homeschool their children. There are other homeschool families that reach out to participate in Field Trip Fridays from different homeschool co-ops in the community in addition to cyber-school students.

The Museum’s Manager of Museum Accessibility, Margie Makowski launched the program in March 2022 that was inspired by her previous work with virtual learners.

The project is decided on what popular artworks the Museum is showing in a current exhibition. Once a theme is established, Margie thinks of artistic techniques that students can learn from pieces on view.  “By doing this, students can explore themes that resonate with their own lives, while also learning how to use a specific medium or creative technique in the arts.”

The program is free to all, but preregistration is required. Please contact Museum educator Margie Makowski at mmakowski@allentownartmuseum.org or at 610-432-4333, ext. 132.
