The Museum’s tall case clock, made by Dutch clockmaker Anthonie van Oostrum around 1750, is being cleaned and repaired by horologist Lili von Baeyer. Over time, dust and debris adhere to the oil that keeps the clock parts moving freely. Regular maintenance and cleaning are required to keep the 275-year-old clock functioning.
Von Baeyer has disassembled the clock mechanism and will document and clean each component. During the cleaning process she will inspect all the parts for damage and make the necessary repairs. After the conservation work is completed, Lili will reassemble the mechanism and test it to make sure it is in working order and keeping accurate time.
The clock will return to view in the Kress Gallery in July.
