In the exhibition Washi Transformed, contemporary artists use washi, traditional Japanese paper, to create innovative and creative artworks. Something as simple as paper can be used to sculpt, paint, print, and much more. Today, use paper to create a lantern.
Supplies Needed:
- Construction Paper
- Scissors
- Glue or tape
- Crayons, markers, or colored pencils (optional)
- Small cut pieces of paper (optional)
Steps to Create a Paper Lantern:
- Cut a one inch strip from the bottom of your piece of paper and set aside. This will be your lantern’s handle.
- Fold the paper in half and use your scissors to cut strips from the folded side to the edges of your paper, stopping an inch from the edge.
- Open your folded paper and decorate your lantern with collage, coloring, or painting.
- Create your lantern shape by taping or gluing the edges together to make a tube.
- Add your handle by taping or gluing the strip of paper to the top of your lantern.
