Trexler, Butz, and Goodman Galleries and Trexler Hall

Explore more than 150 works of American art—and their connections to both local and global artistic communities—in our American galleries. This ongoing exhibition investigates how trade, colonization, and the migration of people and ideas have shaped our nation’s culture. Recent acquisitions, including contemporary art and works by African American, Latinx, Latin American, and Indigenous artists, play a key role in this narrative.

Possibly Australian, Blouse, ca. 1940-45, printed rayon crepe. Gift of Kate Fowler Merle Smith, 1978. (1978.26.519)

Highlights include works by Faith Ringgold, José Clemente Orozco, and John Marin, as well as a powerful anti-apartheid drawing by Keith Haring. Other noteworthy additions are Food for Thought, a 1936 tablecloth that features some ninety-eight political sayings; World War II propaganda fashions; and a rare hand-colored photograph of an 1806 embroidered family portrait.
