This selection of original artworks by illustrators Eric Wight (Frankie Pickle, Simon and Schuster), Raina Telgemeier (Smile, Scholastic), Dave Roman (Astronaut Academy, First Second), and Matt Phelan (The Storm in the Barn, Candlewick) details the process of creating successful graphic novels, from pencil sketch to the finished page.

 

ABOUT THE ARTISTS
Eric Wight

Long before Eric Wight became the author and illustrator of the award-winning Frankie Picklegraphic novel series, he spent his childhood in the basement of the Allentown Art Museum attending art classes at the Baum School of Art. After graduating from the School of Visual Arts with a degree in animation, Wight went on to work for such companies as Walt Disney, Warner Bros., Cartoon Network, Marvel Entertainment, DC Comics, Simon & Schuster, and many others. He is currently working on a new series about a superpowered cupcake named Jiminy Sprinkles.

Dave Roman

Dave Roman is the author/illustrator of the Astronaut Academy series and writer of the graphic novels Teen Boat! and Agnes Quill: An Anthology of Mystery. He has contributed stories to Explorer: The Mystery Boxes and Nursery Rhyme Comics and is the coauthor of two New York Times bestselling graphic novels, X-Men: Misfits and The Last Airbender: Zuko’s Story. Roman is a graduate of the School of Visual Arts and worked as a comics editor for the groundbreaking Nickelodeon Magazine from 1998 to 2009. He lives in Astoria, New York, with his wife and fellow comic artist Raina Telgemeier.

Raina Telgemeier

Raina Telgemeier is the author and illustrator of the graphic novels Smile and Drama, both #1 New York Times bestsellers. She also adapted and illustrated four graphic novel versions of Ann M. Martin’s Baby-sitters Club series, and has contributed short stories to many anthologies. Raina’s accolades include an Eisner Award, a Boston Globe Horn Book Honor, a Stonewall Honor, and many Best Of and Notable lists. Raina lives and works in Queens, New York, with her cartoonist husband, Dave Roman.

Matt Phelan

Matt Phelan is the illustrator of many books for young readers, including Flora’s Very Windy Day by Jeanne Birdsall and The Higher Power of Lucky by Susan Patron (winner of the 2007 Newbery Medal). He is the author/illustrator of the graphic novels The Storm in the Barn (winner of the 2010 Scott O’Dell Award) and Around the World. His latest graphic novel, Bluffton, is about summertime, vaudeville, and the young Buster Keaton. His latest picture book is Xander’s Panda Party by Linda Sue Park. Matt lives in Ardmore, Pennsylvania.
